Travel Tips: What Members Need to Know About Baggage Regulations

When preparing for your upcoming journey with Vietnam Airlines, understanding the airline’s baggage policy will help you avoid unnecessary inconvenience at the airport and enjoy a smoother travel experience. Below are the key baggage regulations Members should keep in mind before every flight.

1.	Carry-on Baggage (Free Allowance)

Vietnam Airlines allows passengers to bring carry-on baggage free of charge, subject to route and cabin class:

✈️	Flights between Vietnam and the Americas, Europe, Australia and domestic flights connecting to/from these routes

• • Economy/Premium Economy Class: Total 12 kg, including 1 carry-on piece and 1 personal item.
    
  • Business Class: Total 18 kg, including 2 carry-on pieces and 1 personal item.

✈️	All other routes

• • Economy/Premium Economy Class: Total weight up to 10 kg, including 1 carry-on piece and 1 personal item.
    

  • Business Class: Total weight up to 18 kg, including 2 carry-on pieces and 1 personal item.

Carry-on baggage size & weight limits

• • Carry-on piece: 56 × 36 × 23 cm (22 × 14 × 9 in)
    
  • Personal item: 40 × 30 × 15 cm (16 × 12 × 6 in)
    
  • Maximum weight per carry-on piece: 10 kg

Important notes:

• • On flights operated by ATR72 aircraft, the carry-on allowance is up to 7 kg, including 1 carry-on piece and 1 personal item.
    
  • Children aged 2 years and above/infants under 02 years old occupying a separate seat are entitled to the same carry-on baggage allowance as adults.
    
  • Infants under 2 years old (not occupying a seat) may bring 1 carry-on item up to 3 kg / 7 lb, including baby food, milk, and a fully foldable stroller that fits in the cabin. If cabin storage is unavailable, the stroller will be transported as checked baggage free of charge.

2.	Free Checked Baggage Allowance

Vietnam Airlines’ free checked baggage allowance applies to adults and children aged from 2 to under 12 years/infants under 02 years old occupying a separate seat, as follows:

✈️  Domestic flights within Vietnam

• • Business / Premium Economy Class:
    1 piece, up to 32 kg
    
  • Economy Class:
    1 piece, up to 23 kg

✈️  Flights within Southeast Asia

(excluding wholly domestic Vietnam routes)

• • Business Class:
    1 piece, up to 32 kg
    
  • Premium Economy / Economy Class:
    1 piece, up to 23 kg

✈️  Flights between Vietnam and Japan and from Japan to/from Europe and Australia; and to/from the Americas

• • Business Class:
    2 pieces, each up to 32 kg
    

  • Premium Economy / Economy Class:
    2 pieces, each up to 23 kg

✈️  Other routes

• • Business Class:
    2 pieces, each up to 32 kg
    
  • Premium Economy Class:
    2 pieces, each up to 23 kg
    
  • Economy Class:
    1 piece, up to 23 kg

📌 Note:

• The total dimensions of each checked baggage piece must not exceed 158 cm (length + width + height).
• A carry-on baggage allowance of 7 kg and 01 piece of checked baggage up to 23 kg applies to flights operated by ATR72 aircraft.

• Infant without seat:

  • From/To the Americas: 01 piece with a maximum weight of 23 kg / 50 lb and total dimensions not exceeding 115 cm / 45 in.

  • Other itineraries: 01 piece with a maximum weight of 10 kg / 22 lb and total dimensions not exceeding 115 cm / 45 in.

3.	Special Baggage

Vietnam Airlines supports the carriage of special baggage items such as sports equipment, baby strollers, wheelchairs, bicycles, or items requiring a passenger seat, subject to specific conditions and regulations.

4.	Restricted and Prohibited Items

For safety reasons, certain items may be restricted or prohibited in carry-on or checked baggage, including sharp objects, compressed gases, and non-compliant lithium batteries. Passengers are advised to review the detailed list of restricted items to ensure full compliance with aviation safety regulations.
